The way I interpret this one is like this. Obviously, Reimu and Alice are lovers but deep inside, the two of them feel that something is not “right” and that things may not turn out so well than they imagined at first. However, they’re both too shy to tell each other that troublesome feeling. They continue with their life as life partners growing together in each others love.
But humans have a very short life span compared to youkai. Reimu Hakurei, despite being a powerful being is not exempted to death’s embrace. Komachi comes to the Hakurei Shrine to take Reimu to Higan. Reimu begs Komachi to give her time to see Alice. Upon seeing Reimu near her doorstep, Alice is stunned but immediately realizes what is going on.
Reimu Hakurei is dead. Her love…has met peace.
Alice offers her ribbon as a memento. Reimu comments how Alice is still a cry baby even up to this very day. She tells her that she’ll always be in her heart and that she will never forget her. Reimu leaves without looking back but Alice stops her and tells her everything she felt with the shrine maiden was more than worth it. Reimu finally breaks down. Their insecurities from the past shatters at last and they share their final hug.
